January 25, 2004Its hard to say anything bad about either one. It just about rests on brand loyalty.
My father and I owned a 1999 Rams with the Cummins for 5 years and had no major problems. When it was time for new ones he went with the Cummins again and I opted for the Duramax.
After 3 months he loves his and I love mine. So far if I had to do it over again I would still buy the Chevy.
I do think that the Chevy feels a little better behind the wheel than the Dodge but thats just my opinion.
January 26, 2004Never been in or owned a Ram, but the cummins are just WAY to loud. I know guys that have to turn them off, if they are in their truck with the window down and you are outside the truck at the door talking to them.
January 27, 2004The Cummins is hard to beat. There's something to be said of that inline six design for durability and longevity. If you look at used oil analysis reports of the PSD, Dmax, and Cummins, the Cummins will always turn in the lowest wear numbers of the three.
The '03 and up 5.9L Cummins is much quieter than it's predecessor. Common rail, pilot fuel injection and deeper webs cast in the block are some of the things they've done to quiet that beast down. Ford, GM, and Dodge diesels are currently all within a few decibel points of one another at idle.
The Cummins peak torque/hp is always at a much lower RPM than the V-8 counterparts as well. The '04 published figures for the Cummins are now 345hp/600 ft. lbs. torque.
The biggest drawback of the Dodge/Cummins has always been the automatic transmission. Word is now, that they'll be offering an Eaton automatic transmission for the diesel.
January 27, 2004My father has an '04 Cummins and it is not much louder than my Duramax. Before I bought the Edge his Cummins was slightly faster than my Duramax.
January 27, 2004GreenDuramax-
After you added the EDGE how much faster is your D-Max??? Just wondering. I've heard that the EDGE is a great product.
January 27, 2004The new 5.9L HO cummins is VERY quiet. I'm looking to get one. When you stand next to it you can barley tell it's a diesel.
The cummins has 325 HP at 2,900 RPM and 600 lb ft at 1,600 RPM
For me it is by engine choice and then styling. I don't want something made by Izuzu........
January 27, 2004Just curious why the bias against Isuzu? They obviously make a good diesel, which is something that GM had problems with before the Duramax was introduced. Is a diesel good if you tow things often, or is it just for people who tow really, really heavy things. Because when i graduate I'm plannin on having some toys that need to be towed (boat, snowmobiles) things like that. Or is a Z71 tough enough to take that kind of work?
Sorry about the long post, but diesels of late have grown on me.
January 27, 2004I have a quick question is the powerstoke better than the duramax? All the ford guys seem to swear it is but the numbers I have seen wouldn't appear that it would.
January 27, 2004If you are going to tow a boat, snowmobiles, etc, a z71 should be more than enough. Pulling those behind a big diesel will be like pullin nothin at all. I am moving to Montana in 4 years, and will drive back and forth to Washington, and i go vacationing in Oregon. I will be towin a jeep, and will have 3 or 4 people with me, plus all our gear. Maybe one day a toyhouse or camper also. If you plan to tow ALOT on longer trips, the diesel is the only way to go. If you do like i do now, tow in the summer, taking the boat to the lake, etc, a regular truck should be just fine.....
And I don't care for Izuzu. The d-max is an amazing motor, and i would drive either of the big 3. I really like the new cummins, WAY better than the d-max or powerstroke. I love the power a inline 6 will produce.... But for me it also comes down to style, and the new silverado/sierra is not to my tastes. The superduty is nice, BUT it is not as refined. The Ram is just beautiful. That is the first time I have sat in a truck and felt perfect in it....... it fits. And it still has a solid axle up-front!
As for the diesel transmission, i'm getting a 6-speed.... Love that manual!
January 27, 2004Ford people always think that their stuff is better. I agree I like all of the BIG 3's diesel trucks (Superduties and HD's and the Ram Heavy Duty). Thanks 88GMC for the answer about the 1/2 ton pickup. I guess I'll have to weigh my options when its time to pull the trigger on a truck. What if during the summer I had to tow lawn equipment everyday, would that warrant a diesel or still a 1/2 ton? Thanks
Because when i become a teacher i'll need somethin to do in the summer.
January 27, 2004i think both CUmmins and Dmax engiens are great. We have some on one of the ranches amd they seem to always fall apart. I see no good in an Engine that can out last the body by 100,000 miles. IF we get a dodge we take off the back and put a flat bed on it, and ushaly the fenders will come off and other paneling in 5 years or so. Never had a problem w/ the new dmax
