September 8, 2009I have a 1996 K1500 Z71 that I bought in late 2004 with 64k on it. It now has 115k. Since that time I have replaced the fuel pump 3 times! I think another one has now bit the dust. My last replacement was about 13 months ago. I have not always been the easiest on fuel pumps, but this particular pump has only once seen a tank under 1/4 tank, ironically the last time it was driven before it decided not to start.
Currently, I can hear the pump turn on and then shutoff when "pressure" is built, but when I go to turn it over, the engine acts like it is not getting enough/any fuel. If I continue to let the pump build pressure again then try and start for a couple seconds over and over until I'm almost out of battery, it will eventually start to try and fire more and more and eventually will start. It seems to run fine once started; in fact, it will even start right back up after I turn it off. if I let it set for a couple hours, its back to square one. I'm getting very aggravated with this as I don't feel like I should have to replace these fuel pumps as a routine maintenance.
Please help me out! I feel like there has to be something else causing these pupms to weaken or whatever. Like I said, I can hear the pump so its working, but maybe weak?? Any input is welcome. Thanks!
