August 15, 2011I have a 2006 Silverado I was pulling into a parking lot and my 4 wheel drives engages on its own. I shut the truck off and cranked it back up and all the lights for the 4 wheel drive was off. I then have been driving it and the 4 wheel drive will not work. I drove the truck today and put it in reverse and again it engages into 4 wheel low on its own. I shut the truck off and no lights and its disengaged. The switch is $73 but was wondering is that the problem or should I spend the money and take it to the shop?

October 12, 2011i am looking at buying a 2004 chevy silverado z71 crew cab but the guy says that the truck wont shift from 2wd to 4wd lo but it will shift from 2wd to 4wd hi.he says it needs an encoder motor but if it needed a motor it wouldnt shift into 4wd hi right? wondering if its just the switch. or could it be serious like a tranfer case? can anyone help?
October 24, 2011I have had similar issues. It all started with a pin hole leak from the transfer case. A few months after the case was replaced I lost the lights on the push buttons (4wd). Then while driving down the highway (75mph) the truck kept trying to engage 4hi. When I pulled over and shifted to park the truck still rolled as if in neutral (i had no gears from that point on). After several restarts and roadside repairs I got it into 4hi and limped it into a parking lot. Once the truck cooled off I was able to get it into 2wd and disconnect the push buttons at the module under the dash. I then got new push button and installed them. When I reconnected the buttons the problem started again. The buttons wont get the truck in 4low only 4hi and Auto 4wd. After a few momnets when you shift from drive or reverse to park the it makes a loud grinding noise and forces itself into park. However, once in park it will still roll as if in neutral. Again turning the truck off usually resets the program and as long as I keep it on Auto 4wd it runs ok. PLEASE HELP
October 24, 2011first the transfer leak is a design flaw. The transfer case oil pump wears on the case creating the leak. Been there done that
jeffarmstrong79 I would suggest replacing the switch because it can short out causing this issue.
drwalker909 the encoder motor is what switches the transfer case between 2wd, 4h1 and 4 low. If the motor has a bad spot in it it may stick the transfer case in Neutral which will create this problem. Usually though the encoder motor goes out completly. Hope this Helps...JohnB
