November 5, 2011I haven’t been active on here in years. Not really sure who is still around from when I use to frequent the site. Anyway, I`m driving a Chevy again, so I figured it was time to come back. Its funny how things work out. When I joined this site in `04, I owned a 1998 Z71. It was a great truck, but being young with more money then I was smart enough to manage at the time, I sold it and bought an `05 Silverado brand new the next year. Kept that trend going left this site when I bought an F150 4x4....and then in 2008 A Hemi Ram.
I drove that Ram around for a while until a few late 2010, when I found out we were going to have a baby. I’m fortunate enough to have a company vehicle that comes home with me every night and the wifey has a decent little car, so I decided to sell the Ram to free up some cash each month and roll with just her car and my company vehicle. I did for a while and it was OK, but I really missed having a truck.
I decided that I wanted to spend a few grand and just get something simple that I could pay off. Buying an older truck now, really isn’t an issue, as I have only averaged about 6k miles a year on my trucks for the last several years.
As I started looking for this cash truck, I began thinking that I would really like to find something like my old `98 Z71. I looked for a good long while and...wow...those trucks have been beat on in the last several years. Every single one of them had 200k+ miles or had been lifted to the sky and abused in the mud. ...and then I found the one that was still a good truck..
I found a 1997 Z71, extended cab for sale by the original owner. This guy bought it brand new in 1997 and was in the same situation as I am, with having a company vehicle. The truck just rolled 100k miles! It literally has 101,200 ,miles on it. Completely original everything, never wrecked etc. Very rare find. Interior was a little dirty and there some light clear coat scratches (could be buffed out)..and that’s about it. It runs absolutely perfect and strong. I picked it up for $5,500 about a month ago.
I really like this "new" truck. I really cant explain why. I have been driving much newer and much "nicer" trucks for years. But for some reason, I love my "new" old 4x4. Maybe its because this is the body style of Chevy that was so hot when I was getting my drivers license. Whatever the reason, I am happy as can be with this old truck. Its fun having something to tinker with a little bit again and I look forward to logging on here once in a while again.
